Black Coral Many varieties of black coral exist in Cozumel, however are few and far between. Collected for its hard, black skeletal structure, it is carved, polished and sold by jewelers as a semiprecious material. Now it is illegal to remove black coral from the protected reefs. Touching the coral will give you a stinging sensation and will often result in a rash.
